Our Aboriginal Ancestor Search
For those people who are only interested in applying for their Certificate of Aboriginal Status card, this search is not required. If you apply for your card at our other site, this search is done at no charge to you. Go to www.aboriginalstatus.org to apply for your card. When we receive your application a search is done as part of the approval process. If we find your ancestor, your application is approved but we do not identify the ancestor to you.
We offer this service separately for people who are interested in identifying and learning more about their aboriginal ancestor(s).
When you apply for a search we check our databases for any aboriginal connections already in our files. We then have one of researchers look in archives and other sources for your native ancestors. The fee of $100 does not cover the dozens, even hundreds of hours that go into this. The fee is used to purchase additional research resources for our library or for various memberships that give us access to records not available elsewhere.
When all the searching has been completed, we notify you of the results. Included would be any information we have regarding your aboriginal ancestor and a chart showing how you are related to them. If we find several natives in your background you are given the information for each of them.
It is important that you provide us with as much family information as possible. Your aboriginal connection(s) may not be in the branch of your family where you thought it was. But if your information is very limited, it could still be very useful. Even if all you know is that grandma told you that you had an aboriginal ancestor, we would endeavor to identify that person.
Have you heard of an Indian named Ots-Toch? We have almost 4,500 of her descendents. How about Treinka? We have almost 5,000 of her descendents. We hope this gives you an idea of how extensive our files are. If you were to hire a genealogist to find your aboriginal ancestor it would probably cost you hundreds, even thousands of dollars. This is beyond the budget of many people. We believe our unique service offers you a good possibility of success at a very affordable price.
The cost of the search is $100, which we hope you find reasonable considering all the aboriginal records that are accessed on your behalf. If you feel that our work is important but don’t wish to have a search done, you can help in other ways. You can provide us with your family information to ensure that it is documented for future generations. This will enable us to include your family’s aboriginal ancestry in future publications. Donations are of course always welcome.
